The
summer project consists of five full weeks of laboratory research
experience (30 hrs/week), includes University of Arizona laboratory
safety training and an introduction to toxicology and environmental
health at the annual ToxStart summer institute for high school
students. The KEYS high school student Internship started with
a one week training classes, which included basic lab skills, reading
a science a paper, keeping a lab notebook, research ethics, and
much more. Each week the students will gather for a journal club
to discuss their experiences and present a seminar on one article
their mentor assigns. At the end of the summer there will be an
activity to present a poster session that summarizes their research
experience. The interns were selected competitively for the project.
Requirements included a high school GPA of 3.2 on 4.0 grading scale,
being at least 16 years of age, a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
with strong recommendations from both a science teacher and from
a school counselor, employer, other teacher, or similar reference.
The project is a collaboration between SWEHSC and the BIO5 Institute.
