The
SWEHSC Summer Teacher Workshop, Teaching Toxicology
to Teens, was held June
7-11,
2004 at the College of Pharmacy, University
of Arizona. The workshop was very successful,
with 17 middle and high school teachers in attendance.
The
week was filled
with a variety of informative events. Hands-on
labs, CD-ROM-based lessons, and on-line computer activities
were presented from Chemicals,
The Environment and You (an NIEHS curriculum)
and Chemicals
and Human Health (an on-line tutorial).
Guest speakers from the College of Pharmacy presented
information on introductory
toxicology, teaching toxicology, genetic variation
and human health, the neurotoxicity of ecstasy,
and possible environmental
causes of cancer in the Sierra Vista region.
Teachers
toured both the Proteomics Lab and the Microarray
Lab.
