What is Tox - Start Summer Program?

Tox-Start is a FREE week-long academic enrichment program for any Arizona high school student interested in science or a health career. This program is available at The University of Arizona’s College of Pharmacy in Tucson. The program targets Freshmen and Sophomores. Tox-Start helps young people prepare for their future in science research or health professions by exploring toxicology and environmental health in depth.

During the week you will have an opportunity to:

* Explore basic toxicology principles in laboratory experiments
* Learn about local environmental health topics
* Meet with students and faculty
* Tour biomedical laboratories
* Research an environmental health topics
* Learn strategies for reading science

And learn the following activities:

** Understanding toxicity with Brine Shimp using Caffeine
** Dose-Response Seed Germination Investigations
** Toxicity Testing with California Blackworms - Using Alcohol
** Reading Research Papers

* High school freshmen and sophomores who have a strong interest in health research or a health care profession.

* Any Arizona resident.

* All students must be permanent residents or US citizens.

APPLICATIONS DUE MAY 21, 2006.

(If downloading the application, please be sure to obtain all forms needed to complete your application. Also be sure to follow all directions on the forms.)

Application Process

1. Request an application packet or download application materials from this web page.

2. Complete the Tox -Start application form and sign.

3. Obtain a current high school transcript. Ask your counselor for assistance.

4. Obtain two recommendations (forms are included in the application packet).

Please mail all materials together in one envelope. We do not accept faxed or emailed applications. We must receive all application materials by May 21, 2006 in order for the application to be reviewed by the selection committees. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Applications turned in after the deadline will not be considered.
