PharmCamp

Students from four Tucson middle schools are getting a hands-on look at pharmacy careers through PharmCamp at the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy.

During the free program faculty and students at the college are giving the students a look at pharmacy through interactive exercises, labs, workshops, projects and activities designed to teach the many aspects of pharmacy.

Students will take a tour of the University of Arizona campus and visit a community pharmacy and health-care clinic and a local pharmaceutical manufacturer, learning about research into new medicines and how medicines are made.

Two individuals from the Southwest Environmental Health Sciences Center-Ms. Gevirtzman, Instructional Specialist and Mrs. Penrod, CATTS Fellow-conducted hands-on experiments for the visiting students. “Alcohol and Blackworms”, “Race for the Cure”, and “Lemons and Onions” were the experiments Ms. Gevirtzman and Mrs. Penrod conducted. “Alcohol and Blackworms” serves to illustrate the dangers associated with the consumtion of alcohol, “Race for the Cure” involves students working in groups racing to find a “cure” for cancer, while “Lemons and Onions” shows the relationship between health problems and environmental hazards.

PharmCamp is sponsored by the UA College of Pharmacy, the University of Arizona Health Sciences Office of Multicultural Affairs, UA Hispanic Alumni Association, UA Office of Early Academic Outreach, Tucson Unified School District, Basha's Community Gift Program and Aventis Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
